aww - alt.www.webmaster

Here you can find a list of all the regulars in AWW. That is, if I didn't accidentally miss anyone. If you notice any absent regulars, please tell me, and I'll add them.

Sally Thompson described the AWW-effect quite well, when she introduced herself to AWW after having lurked for some time:

"Reading AWW has been a bit like travelling on a train, always looking into other people's houses and learning a lot about them but not being part of their lives. I know you all, where some of you live, whether you are married, what you do, what you like. You all feel like my friends."

The initial idea for this list isn't mine, all credit for that goes to Judy, who set up and maintained this page since some long time ago (before I even had heard of Usenet). Thanks Judy!

In early August 1999 I travelled to SE Asia, planning to spend two months visiting Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and southern China. At the end of August, as my Thai visa was expiring, I travelled to Malaysia, thinking of staying two weeks before heading back north.

I have activated these web spaces and placed this index.html page so something shows up. Do not expect to ever see a complete web site here. I intend to use this space simply for testing new ideas ... or posting a page of opinions. :-)

You wouldn't spend money creating an exquisite brochure then bury it in a drawer where no-one can see it. That's what you're doing with your web site if you don't optimise it. This is the opposite of what you need to do;

"...failing to be seen on the first page of results means that over 40% of potential visitors will not find your site." this from the iProspect Search Engine User Attitudes Survey, April 2004.

Blinky [ web site ]

blinky screenshot

Blinky was born when I read that some sharks don't blink. It was obvious that there should be one that does, and I decided to shoulder that responsibility, myself. Then I realized that sharks don't have shoulders. Hell, they don't even have bones - just cartilage. So I was forced to simply take on the responsibility without the metaphor. That seemed a lot less classy, but it had to be done. As it turns out, some sharks - besides me - do blink, but by the time I found out about that, I was already Blinky.

Brian 'GreyWyvern' Huisman [ web site ] [ Orca Ring ]

greywyvern screenshot

Welcome to GreyWyvern.com, the personal playground of GreyWyvern and all of his web adventures.

Over the years this site has been a lot of things: a showcase for my music, a repository for some drawings I did, and even an archive holding much of my writing. Over those same years I learned a lot of things too; mainly that those goals were best attempted offline. So now, the site is simply a cache of all my online endeavors.

Brian Wakem [ web site ]

Brian Wakem screenshot

It's not exactly a homepage, but it is the only place on the web Brian seems to advertise as his own ;-)

Chaddy2222 [ web site ]

Chaddy2222 screenshot

Charles Sweeney [ web site ]

Judy (a.k.a. Technohippie) in her AWW observation: "Charles is one of my favorite webmasters from Scotland ... in fact, I don't think I know any other Scottish webmasters. Since I can't find any personal stuff on his website, I think he's a developer/speculator and I hear he does quite well. Sadly, he was too busy to run his hosting business, AbleInternet, and now I can't wait to see what new projects he's up to."

Wipkip.biz is gone, wipkip.us is a blog by more than one person, and the only online page I know of that still resembles the old familiar Wipkip website, "the mudwrestling party", seems to have disappeared as well :-(

"The title Locus Meus is Latin and means 'my place'.
And that's what this site is all about. My place on the web, where I can experiment with webdesign, show off my kids and my photography, and maybe some day even have a blog."

Well, some things have changed. The experimenting with web design has turned into a profession, and yes, I've finally started a blog!

Heidi [ web site ]

This website will constantly grow and evolve as long as I am alive. It will speak of my interests, my thoughts, my dreams. I will share as well my writing, my photography and anything else that is of interest.

Perhaps you too will share in some of my interests and if so perhaps you will find some joy in the site contents.

Heidi also posts the AWW FAQ in AWW every Thursday.

Judy is the one who started this AWW regulars list and maintained it for a good couple of years, before she 'retired' and asked me to continue. Her current site is in blog-form, so I decided to take the following words from her blog profile instead of an excerpt from the latest entry.

"Aging TechnoHippie proactively practicing civil disobedience and demanding freedom and peace for all."

Karl Core [ web site ]

Kim André Akerø aka NeonNero [ web site ]

kim-andre-akero screenshot

Why a website?
I'm usually a quite shy person, especially around other people. I tend to sit among others, listening to their conversations and watching their reactions rather than participating. With this presence on the web, I get a chance to share my thoughts and opinions with the rest of the world at my own leisure, instead of forcing myself into speaking up in public at times I don't really want to. I really don't care how many people read the articles on my website, as long as I have somewhere to blow off some steam. If I can get people to read and react to it, as well as participate in discussions about those topics, then so be it!

(Kim also recently ressurrected the AllMyFaqs website)

All My FAQs [ web site ]

allmyfaqs screenshot

As there have been no significant updates since around 2003, and to protect the existing integrity of the site, I've decided to make this version of the FAQ read-only. If you, however, want to suggest updates to any of the FAQ entries, you can contact me.

I hope this FAQ continues to inform webmasters as All My FAQs has been doing previously over the years.

Big thanks to the original All My FAQs owner, Jerry Muelver, for providing me with all his backup files for this website.

Leonard Blaisdell[ web site ]

I have been retired for a couple of years with only my wife and starving artist web service to keep me going, so if you're an employer in the Reno/Sparks area, I'd be happy to send you an online resume. I've always been one to take things apart just for the challenge of putting it back together and having it still behave as desired when I'm finished. Some of those efforts, of course, have been more successful than others. For instance, my dad was not very pleased with me when, at 9 years old, I dismantled a mono tube amp that he had built and turned it into a smoke generator.

Think of these new pieces as tiny wearable sculptures. They have a rough, brutal form that contrasts with the refinement of finished stones and pearls. The smooth machined shapes of commercial jewelry, and even most studio art jewelry leave me cold. The precious metals are highly workable -- I want my jewelry to express this instead of hiding it.

MGW [ web site ]

Welcome to my site — I hope you find it helpful. If this is your first visit, click here for a guide to the site. This site is named after the book Uniquely Gifted: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice-Exceptional Student, edited by Kiesa Kay. Twice-exceptional children (that is, intellectually gifted children with special needs such as AD/HD, learning disabilities, Asperger Syndrome, etc.) have a hard time of it in our education system - because their giftedness can mask their special needs and their special needs hide their giftedness, they are often labeled as "lazy", "unmotivated", "not trying".

When the doors to your high street shop close at 5-pm, and all your staff head of home for the evening, your business stops earning it's keep.
However, when 5-pm comes around, your ESHOP keeps on earning for you. Sales through your ESHOP can come in at any time of the day, and statistics have in fact proved that the majority of your ESHOP sales actually happen in the evening, through the night and at weekends.

As a long time web user and self-proclaimed HTML guru, I have a small section on what I feel is the "best practice" for creating web pages. It includes a (half-written) tutorial for newbies and some more in-depth looks at particular aspects of web design, such as navigation. There is also a page full of add-ons, hints and tips for my favourite web browser Opera, including the ever-popular w3-dev menu.

What's this site for then? I know you're beside yourself with curiosity.

Not another vanity site? Possibly, but I promise you - there's no sickly pictures of family and pets. Well not yet anyway.

A blatant attempt at self promotion then? A little of that too - you may find there's stuff about work and such like.

I once had to jump into the mud with an anchor. I sank to my waist and had to carry the anchor while dragging 100lbs chain and 150ft. of net through that mud as far as it could stretch — it was a very long struggle, and I collapsed before I reached the end of the net and drowned!
